History

The Chilterns Lodge No 4634

For over 100 years, The Chilterns Lodge has stood as a beacon of brotherhood and service, unwavering in its commitment to Freemasonry’s core principles.

From its founding in 1924 to the present day, generations of members have carried forward a proud tradition, always striving to make a positive impact on the community and the wider world.

The Founding Vision: 1924

It all began in 1923, when Beaconsfield Lodge No. 2849 agreed to sponsor what would become The Chilterns Lodge. Though the exact reasons remain shrouded in mystery, one thing was clear: the founders had a bold vision for what this new Lodge could achieve. Spearheading the initiative was W.Bro. James Bernard Corp, whose dedication and leadership would be instrumental in shaping the Lodge’s early years.

On **25th July 1923**, Beaconsfield Lodge formally agreed to sponsor The Chilterns Lodge and signed the Petition. However, progress slowed until **4th February 1924**, when W. Bro. Corp convened the founders with a letter from the Provincial Grand Master suggesting that W.Bro. Robert James Godson PAGStDb serve as the first Master. A vote followed, and W.Bro. Godson was duly invited to lead the Lodge, an honour he gladly accepted.

Thus, on **17th March 1924**, the Warrant was issued, marking the official birth of The Chilterns Lodge No. 4634.

Growing Pains and Triumphs

As with any new endeavour, the early years of The Chilterns Lodge were not without their challenges. One of the first resolutions passed was that no other ceremony would take place during Installation meetings. However, like many well-meaning resolutions, this was broken within two years.

The Lodge was initially given space at Beaconsfield’s Council Hall, where meetings were held every fourth Saturday in January, March, May, September, and November. But as the Lodge grew in numbers and reputation, the need for a larger, more permanent home became clear.

Moving Locations: From Council Hall to Beaconsfield

The Lodge met at various locations over the decades. In **January 1925**, it moved to the Masonic Hall at Gerrards Cross, where it remained for 47 years. In **1973**, the Lodge moved once more, this time to the Masonic Centre at Slough. Finally, in **March 1998**, the Lodge settled into its current home at the Beaconsfield Masonic Centre.

“I remember the move to Beaconsfield in 1998. It felt like the start of a new chapter,” recalls W.Bro. John Smith, Past Master. “It was a significant change for us, but one that brought renewed energy and enthusiasm to the Lodge.”

Charity at the Heart of Our Work

From its earliest days, The Chilterns Lodge has placed charity at the very heart of its mission. Over the years, members have raised thousands of pounds for a wide range of charitable causes, both local and international. These include The Royal Masonic Institution for Boys (and Girls), The Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution, The Royal British Legion, and PACE (helping children with neurodisabilities).

“Freemasonry isn’t just about our meetings – it’s about what we do for others,” says W.Bro. Peter Sives, Senior Warden. “Our Lodge has always been committed to giving back, and I’m proud of the difference we’ve made.”

Key Milestones

Throughout its 100-year history, The Chilterns Lodge has achieved many remarkable milestones.

These include:

  • **17th March 1924** – The Lodge received its Warrant.
  • **30th May 1924** – The Lodge was consecrated at Freemason’s Hall, London, with 83 Brethren in attendance.
  • **1973** – The Lodge became the grand-mother of Hall Barn Lodge, sponsored by our daughter Penn & Tylers Green Lodge.
  • **1998** – The Lodge moved to its current home at Beaconsfield Masonic Centre.

Looking to the Future

As we celebrate our centenary, we honour the past, embrace the present, and look forward to the future. Our journey has been one of growth, fellowship, and dedication to the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth. With 90 different Masters having served over the years, and an impressive 421 regular meetings and 165 initiations held, The Chilterns Lodge remains as strong as ever.

As we move into our next century, we remain committed to preserving our heritage while continuing to evolve and grow. With 25 active members from diverse backgrounds, we are excited for the future and the new opportunities it will bring.
